39th Graduation Ceremony of SLITHM held at the BMICH

The 39th graduation ceremony of Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) was held at the BMICH on 11th June 2018.

The Chief Guest at the event was Hon John A.E Amarathunga, Minister of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs, while the Guest of Honour was Chairman, Jetwing Hotels, Hiran Cooray. A total of 90 students received their management diploma on this occasion.

SLITHM initiates scholarship program for students

In a move to attract more youth and popularize careers in the Tourism and Hospitality sector, The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management (SLITHM) recently initiated a scholarship awarding program for its students. Children of low income families and rural areas will immensely benefit from this program.

This program was held at the SLITHM auditorium on 7th June 2018 under the patronage of the Hon John A.E Amarathunga, Minister of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs. It is also the first time that a scholarship program has been initiated at SLITHM since its inception in 1964.

164 full scholarships and 10 half scholarships were awarded to the first batch of students representing the Southern Province. The program is mainly targeted at children of families with an income of less than LKR 10,000 where a full scholarship will be provided. Additionally, a half scholarship will be provided for children of families with an income between LKR 10000 and LKR 25,000. The process of selecting suitable candidates is transparent where a recommendation of the area Grama Sevaka is required for eligibility.

The Director General of SLITHM, Mr Buddhika Hewawasam further explained that through the Tourism Development Levy and Embarkation Tax, a total sum of LKR 5.5 million was allocated for this initiative. The scholarship will cover expenses of Course Fees, Uniforms, Accommodation and Transport.

Sri Lanka Tourism Toastmasters Club Chartering Ceremony held at Hotel Samudra

In a move that would undoubtedly raise the profile of Sri Lankas pioneer Tourism and Hospitality education provider, the SLITHM teamed up with Toastmasters International to enable its staff develop speech craft and presentation skills.


After a series of intensive training sessions for SLITHM staff, the Charter Installation Ceremony of the club was held at the Samudra Training Hotel of SLITHM on 24th May 2018. The chief guest of this event was Mr Ajantha jayawardena – District Director, District 82 – Toastmasters International.

Toastmasters Club Chartering Ceremony is an important milestone for a newly formed club. It is special as the first club officers are installed and charter members are inducted. Currently, 22 academic and non-academic staff members of SLITHM represent the club.

Director General of SLITHM Mr Buddhika Hewawasam took charge in introducing Toastmasters to SLITHM and the Chairman of SLITHM Mr Sunil Dissanayake provided constant encouragement and motivation at development stages of the club. The interest and enthusiasm shown by the founding members were instrumental in making this endeavour a great success.

Special thanks goes to Toastmaster Mrs Gayanthika Gunasekara and Mr Sudath Ranaweera – Area Director – Division H for the great effort made to form the club at SLITHM. SLITHM was immensely supported in this initiative through the training sessions provided by Sri Lankan Airlines Toastmasters Club members and resource personnel – Mr Niranjan De Silva, Mr Zameen N Saleem, Mr Sudash Liyanage, Mr Ajantha Jayawardena, Priyakara Jayaratne. The Head of IT, Sri Lankan Airlines – Mr Chamara Perera also graced this event.

Toastmasters International (TI) is a non-profit educational organization with its headquarters in the USA that operates clubs worldwide for the purpose of promoting communication, public speaking, and leadership skills.
