Student Life at SLITHM

    Mr.B.W.A.M.D.Karunanayake

Let me disclose why I decided to be a hotelier. Without my great dreams that coupled with ambition to be a successful hotelier I would have never been the same. Every great dream begins with a dreamer, I always kept in my mind, I am within the strength, the patience and the passion to reach for my goals.

I joined the hotel career as a trainee waiter. At the beginning of my training the first couple of months have not been so easy for me to adjust to the new job environment, but if not for my clear conscience, I don't know how I would have got through it.

There was some exciting years during my days at work in many hotels, categorically five stars and lower unclassified hotels. I don't deny that I went through bad times & good times, but managed to climb up the ladder to some extent.

As I said earlier I dreamt in my life dreams that have stayed with me ever after, and changed my ideas: they have gone through and through me like wine through water, and altered the colour of my mind. This is the story I am going to share with you.

On my own accord I decided to join SLITHM to do my higher studies in Food & Beverage operations. It was a turning point of my life. SLITHM nurtured, challenged, and guided me, it instilled in me, not just knowledge, but a reserve of sustaining values in the hospitality industry. When I stepped in to SLITHM I couldn't believe what a great place this was, equipped with modern facilities which made me feel so comfortable to do my studies without any hassle. I was taught to associate with social activities such as mingling with common people that provide me with immense happiness to serve them. It is needless to say SLITHM arranged field visits which sometimes amused me & on the other hand, I had the opportunity to see rare things to my own naked eyes. When we dream alone, it's only a dream, but when we dream with others it's the beginning of reality. My fellow students give me the courage to achieve my reality. I studied the subjects that are possibly needed to be a good manager one day. The challenge now is to practice what I have learnt, as the art of making what appears to be impossible to possible.

At last but not least during my studies at SLITHM, it made me feel most proud to be a part of a great team. I must thank my lecturers for all the professional help I have received & other staff who have passed on their knowledge & advice to me. Thanks for helping me achieve my potential & reaching my dream. I also made friends who are still among my closest friends today.

Education today is more than a key to climbing the ladder of opportunity, and I have achieved this after completing my studies at SLITHM. I am proud to say that now I am working for Sri Lanka's prestigious hotel chain Aitken Spence Hotel Management as a Restaurant & Bar Manager which gives me the self esteemed happiness to start climbing up in my career until I fulfill my desires to be a General Manager in the Hotel Industry in the future.
